ABOUT

Perth indie outfit Death by Denim, known for their chaotic energy, contrasting shiny synth dance rock and brooding lyricism, have officially entered their fun era with the announcement of their forthcoming ‘My House Is A Club’ EP out March 24 via ADA.

Kicking off the EP is supercharged anthem and title track, ‘My House Is A Club’, inspired by the unescapable chaos of living in a derelict share house that transforms into a non-stop party destination by night. Chasing the constant highs and inevitable lows, it’s the portrayal of a vibrant popular life on social media masking a lonely search for deeper connection in reality.

Following on are previous releases ‘Draped In Vapour’, a hit of fruity scented mist in the depths of late night conversation in the smokers’ section and ‘Magic Daisy’, a fusion of fuzzy, sun-soaked rock’n’roll and wavy synths. Since its release ‘Magic Daisy’ had clocked up over 50k streams in the first month of its release and made its way onto extensive DSP playlisting.

Jumping right into the synth-dance direction ‘Hope We Don’t Fall In Love’, is a song about being afraid of new love when you are still attached to a past relationship. With final track ‘Cruel’ leading the listener into the early hours of the morning; the dark and windy number signifying the distance felt when you lose touch with someone you’re seeing.

The five-track EP may be a smaller dose than 2022’s Moonbow album, however they hit the ground hard spending more consecutive days in the studio than ever before, creating a cohesive set of material inspired by similar influences and ideas, which they can credit to this newfound state of flow. Drawing on inspiration from an eclectic list of artists including The Gorillaz, The Weeknd, Harry Styles, Bee Gees, Kylie Minogue, Todd Terje, Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Major Lazer, Pharrell Williams, Outkast and many more.

Death by Denim discuss, “With the past albums we were recording 3-4 songs at a time over many months, which can be confusing when you have The Weeknd on repeat in January and the Beatles in March. We were on the search for new sounds we had never encountered before and were determined to experiment as much as possible to find them, including a wall of 8 synthesisers, a new drum kit and a fresh range of effects pedals to play with at Debaser Studio, headed up by sound extraordinaire Andy Lawson.”

My House Is A Club EP reflects an anarchic state of mind, bright sparkly nights filled with madness giving way to dark dirty days filled with sadness. Sonically it’s bold, chaotic, and thumping with lyrical undertones of aimlessness masked by hedonistic nights.

2022 saw the band riding high with the release of their album Moonbow, signing to ADA, hitting the road for their largest national headline tour to date, a regional WA tour, sold-out shows in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, and unleashing their rendition of Harry Styles’ ‘Watermelon Sugar’ for triple j’s Lika A Version.
